What started the fire?
The fire started in a bakery on Pudding Lane belonging to Thomas Farriner, the king's own baker. The maid hadn't put out the oven and the heat caused a spark that soon became a roaring fire. It was one in the morning when a servant woke up and saw the house on fire, and he, the baker, and his family all escaped.
The fire spread easily and quickly since London was built mainly of wood. Citizen firefighting brigades did their best to extinguish the fire, but dismally, by eight in the morning, the fire had spread halfway across London Bridge.
